Today was another not particularly pleasant day to be birding. It was on the dark side – most birds appeared to have no color, which made interesting color not real useful for IDs.
The Hermit Thrush that EM found 5′ from his face was the best bird. It was in a particularly dark place.
Canada Goose, Pied-billed Grebe [seen on Kent Lake on our way out of the park], Accipiter sp., Red-headed Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Blue Jay, American Crow, Black-capped Chickadee, swallow sp., Golden-crowned Kinglet, White-breasted Nuthatch, European Starling, Eastern Bluebird, Hermit Thrush, American Robin, American Goldfinch, Eastern Towhee, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, and Northern Cardinal.
About the only color we saw were some Cardinals, a few sugar maples, a few small black-eyed Susan type composites. One fallen leaf was especially beautiful against the brown litter.
Seen on my way home, Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk, and American Kestrel.
At some point EM said he was going to persuade me to lead trips later in the year. Given the dim weather this fall, I am boldly scheduling 2 more walks, 6 November and 20 November. 8 a.m. Meet at the CEC.
